One of the hallmarks of Leola Edelin’s career has been to jump in and help where there’s a need. Since 2015, Leola has been the General Manager of the Renaissance in Albany, NY. Like most hotels, the impact of the global pandemic has been a catalyst for uncertainty and chaos. During this time, Leola has been called to the frontlines where she’s started handling payroll, union reports and family leave. She’s been covering shifts at the front desk, answering the phones and working to get people’s reservations canceled or rebooked. She’s embraced the challenge.
The Renaissance Hotel has kept many of its union associates employed, while a portion of their salaried managers have been laid off or furloughed. Those who have remained employed have been instrumental in maintaining the operation of the hotel. Their primary source of occupancy has been government and medical employees. Her team recognizes the importance of giving medical staff a comfortable place to rest their heads before returning to work.
In addition, Leola has transformed the employee cafeteria and upgraded their menu to provide a much-needed warm meal for her associates. Their chef, instead of preparing a normal menu, takes what they have and prepares a family-style lunch to ensure the food doesn’t go to waste.
“My background is in lifestyle hotels so being creative and thinking outside of the box is what I do best,” said Leola.
She utilized her innovative thinking to ensure that perishable food doesn’t just sit on their kitchen shelves. She’s been able to turn the kitchen into a grocery store for her employees to take home dairy and produce. Her sacrificial approach demonstrates her core desire to take care of her associates and guests.
This has been a challenging time for many, especially for those in hospitality. Leola’s Mogul story serves as an inspiration. Thank you, Leola, for all the hard work you’ve put into supporting your team!
