Eight months since Covid-19’s onset, most hotels haven’t launched marketing campaigns outside of pandemic-related content. On top of this, the industry hasn’t been able to hold events or advertise as a travel destination. Luckily, things have been taking a small turn for the holidays.
The month of December is a peak time for hospitality. Although capitalizing on the typically bustling season is normally easy, this year, turning a profit has been complicated.
People have travel-concerns, financial struggles and low morale. Bookings are statistically lower than previous years; and while things are improving, it’s a slow process.
Hoteliers have been aspiring to put a light on an otherwise dim year. The month of December has provided the perfect opportunity for many brands to temporarily switch things up. Here are some hotels that have gone the extra mile this holiday season.
The Omni Grove Park Inn
The Omni Grove Park Inn has always been a winter getaway because of the beautiful mountain views. This year is no different, the hotel is hosting the yearly National Gingerbread House Competition. It’s happening virtually, so you can participate even if you’re at home. The competition will continue without a public display of the houses due to current restrictions, but the hotel is including socially distanced alternatives for guests.
A life-sized gingerbread house modeled after the hotel will be featured and the hotel includes package deals for the holidays.
Suncadia Resort
Suncadia, located in Washington, hosts a Winterfest event every year. This year is no exception, as they continue to host activities while operating under state regulations. They have a corner where guests can mail letters to Santa, an ice-skating rink, a 15ft Christmas tree and other family-friendly activities. Most of the activities are reservation-only to maintain social distancing standards.
They are also hosting a holiday bazaar virtually. The Suncadia Virtual Market will showcase craftspeople in a consolidated online storefront, which is a fantastic way to support small business owners throughout the holidays.
Ashford Castle
This 800-year-old Irish castle hotel recently announced that residents will be able to book from December 18th to January 6th.
They’ve adorned the property with a Christmas tree in the grand oak hall and decorative wreaths over. This year, they’re offering a package that begins on Christmas Eve. They provide gifts for their guest (handed out by Santa himself). On Christmas Day, they offer a cruise on Lough Corrib with traditional music and hot whiskeys. The stay will include many photo opportunities for guests.
Carolina Inn
For years, Carolina Inn has celebrated the 12 days of Christmas. They are continuing the tradition this year while making a few changes. Guests can join classes to build gingerbread houses and decorate cookies, with one adult accompany kids to ensure social distancing measures. They have included to-go kits for those that don’t feel comfortable being close to others.
The Barnsley Resort
3,000 acres of lights are strung across the property. The resort’s buildings and greenery are lit up every night for guests and a limited number of visitors. This mini-light show has made the Barnsley Resort a travel destination for many.
Guests can enjoy the property’s outdoor fire pit or stay in their cabins with the fireplaces.
