You finally found your dream job. You interviewed, got hired, and everything seemed perfect at first. Then, after a few weeks, you realize your boss is not the same person you thought you were going to work for when you interviewed. Several months later, while you actually still love the job, the feelings you are having for your boss are on the other end of the spectrum.
When this happens, all is not lost. After all, if it took you forever to find your dream job, do you really want to let it slip through your fingers just because your boss is not the ideal fit? There are a few things that can be done to try to tilt the scales back in your favor and create a more palatable relationship with your boss.
Don’t Let It Impact Your Performance
First and foremost, you need to keep doing your job to the best of your ability. Simply put, you cannot put your own job at risk because you don’t like your boss. Besides your boss, there will be others higher up in the food chain paying attention to the work you are doing. If things ultimately get ugly and you have to take some type of action, a strong performance will go a long way to support your case.
Walk in the Boss’ Shoes
As we all know, the higher up the food chain you travel, the more pressure you face. What you are taking as a dislike for you may just be the pressure of the job on your boss. Seriously consider having an informal sit down to ask your boss if there is anything you can do to help alleviate some of that pressure. Look at aspects of his or her job and find areas where taking on some additional tasks would be with tasks you are exceptional at.
This may even open up a line of communication with your direct boss that was previously not there. This is something that could very quickly turn an uncomfortable relationship into a mentoring relationship. Even if your boss does not want to delegate some of his or her tasks to you, consider setting up a weekly or bi-weekly meeting to specifically evaluate your own performance. This may provide more insight into the actual expectations your boss has regarding your own work performance.
There may, of course, come a time when you have tried everything and the situation is simply unworkable.
