It may seem like the obvious thing to do. As soon as you finish perfecting that resume, you should go ahead and place all of its contents on your LinkedIn page. This makes life easy, but it is not the best way to make yourself standout in the LinkedIn universe.

LinkedIn is a chance for you to steer away from your resume by describing yourself and your career in a unique way. Here are 4 ways in which your LinkedIn profile should be different than your resume.

1.      It Doesn’t Have to Be Personalized for a Specific Role

Unlike your resume your LinkedIn profile doesn’t need to be refined for each job you apply for. Your resume should be precise and targeted toward a specific role, while the job of your LinkedIn profile is to attract the interest of as many relevant hiring managers as possible.

To have your LinkedIn profile do this you should consider a few things. While you should not create your LinkedIn profile with one job opening in mind, you should consider your network. What will these individuals and their peers be looking for in a profile? You should also show that you are involved in your industry by sharing articles, joining groups, or even publishing some thought provoking content of your own.

You want to show your interest and expertise in your own industry while also casting a wider net to attract interest outside your circle. To do this don’t be afraid to post articles or join groups outside your industry that you have interest. This will display that you are well-rounded individual, and again it will cast your net even further.

2.     It Should Tell Your Career Story

Your LinkedIn profile is chance for you to include all the items you had to leave out from your resume to cut it down. This can include complete projects, additional skills, etc.

Feel free expand on what a bullet point may say in your resume. For example, on a resume you would get straight to the point by saying, “Increased lead generation by 5% by utilizing more social outlets to attract leads.” Where as in your LinkedIn profile you could say, “I accepted my new marketing role at company X. My previous experience at company Y enabled me to implement a more robust social media strategy, which grew our lead generation by 5%.” This second option tells more of story and allows the reader to connect the dots of your career experience.

3.     It Should Include Examples and References

On your resume you should summarize what you’ve accomplished and expand on it during your interview. When indicating these accomplishments on LinkedIn you can back them up.

Your LinkedIn “backup” can include all sorts of things from work samples to a recommendation or review from your former boss. For example, if you say you are a Hubspot expert include the certificate to validate. On LinkedIn, there are no rules as far as length and what to include. Don’t be afraid to show them what you’ve got!

It may seem easy and natural to have your LinkedIn profile match your resume, however LinkedIn is a tremendous opportunity that should not be wasted. It gives you the chance to expand on your experience and tell your personal career story.
